General
Sport Sandal Care Tips:
Wash
your sandals from time to time - the nylon strapped models
can usually go into the washing machine - but a scrub in
the shower will do no harm and will help to get rid of bacteria.
If your sandals do smell try using a little tea tree oil
- It works amazingly well. Do not leave your sandals too
close to a strong heat source - includes the parcel shelf
of your car in direct sunlight on hot days - this can damage
the rubber compounds in the sole units.
Birki's
(and similar sandals which have EVA soles) can be
maintained just like a car to give you many more
miles out of your investment. After factoring in
the original price you paid for your sandals and
the price of repair work, your Birki's may only
be costing you around $10.00 per year. Many people
have had their Birki's for 15, 20, 25, even 30 years.
The main purpose of these services are to allow
you to keep wearing the same, already molded, footbed.
Recycling
your sandals is easy: just send them in.

Caring
for Birki's Footwear
Q: I
just bought my first pair of Birki's sandals, and
after wearing them for only one day, my feet hurt.
Is this normal? What should I do?
A: Break
in your new Birki's footwear gradually, as they
may introduce new movements to the muscles in your
feet and legs. Although your shoes may feel rigid
at first, their flexibility will increase with wear.
Leather straps will become more supple and the footbeds
will adjust slightly to your feet. The first week,
wear them around your house for only an hour or
two every day. The next week, start wearing them
a little longer, and maybe go out and run an errand
or two in them. The third week, you should be able
to start wearing them an hour or two longer. Continue
this gradual progression until youre confident
that your Birki's footwear is broken in enough to
no longer cause you discomfort. Wearing Birkenstock
footwear can be a different kind of experience for
some; therefore the new, healthy posture encouraged
by the orthopedic footbed may take some time to
adjust to. We strongly recommend that you approach
new Birki's footwear with complete care and respect
for your feet.
Here
are some helpful tips to help you protect and maintain
the life of your Birki's footwear:
Avoid Extreme Heat
If your Birki's footwear has cork footbeds or EVA
soles, both can be damaged by exposure to concentrated
heat. Do not leave your shoes in direct sunlight or
in closed cars on warm days. Keep Birki's footwear
away from campfires, fireplaces, and indoor radiators.
If your shoes become wet, allow them to air dry slowly,
away from direct heat.
Apply
Cork Sealant
Birki's sandals and clogs (with exposed cork footbeds)
come with a light coating of cork sealant on the exposed
cork edge. This prevents the cork from drying out.
When your cork no longer looks shiny, apply a thin
coat of Birkenstock Cork Life® to protect the
cork from the elements.
Renew
or Replace Worn Soles
Prolong the life of your Birki's footwear with heel
and toe taps. They should be applied when the EVA
soles have been worn down to within about 1/4"
of the cork footbed. When worn down more than this,
replace the soles. If your soles tend to wear unevenly,
repair them promptly to ensure your feet remain correctly
balanced. Be sure to use only original Birki's repair
materials.
